Escada Perfumes and Aftershaves
Escada, which means staircase in Portuguese, was founded in 1979 in Munich by husband and wife team Margaretha and Wolfgang Ley. Swedish born Margeretha worked as a model in Stockholm, Vienna and Paris before turning a creative eye towards the fashion world and design. Wolfgang, an ambitious entrepreneur, took care of finances, marketing and production and between them they created a global brand with annual sales in excess of $800 million.
As part of its expansion, the company went public in 1986 but sadly, Margaretha died in 1992. Despite this, Escada continued to expand beyond fashion into accessories and licences for products such as eyewear and fragrances. But 2009 was a difficult year for Escada when the company was declared insolvent and later bought by Lakshmi Mittal, head of India's billionaire steelmaking family. Throughout all of this, Escada has continued to expand its fragrance range, releasing new perfumes each year, mostly as limited editions, making them hard to find.
